Aymer III de Taillefer, Comte d'Angoulême (1160-1202)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aymer_of_Angoul%C3%AAme

and in French: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aymar_Taillefer

Aymer I (c. 1160–16 June 1202), the last Taillefer Count of Angoulême.

[edit] History

Aymer (or Aymar) was the third of the 6 children of William IV of Angoulême, the Count of Angoulême, and Marguerite of Turenne. His two elder brothers, Wulgrin III of Angoulême and William V of Angoulême became the Counts of Angoulême, respectively, after the death of their father in 1179 (Wulgrin first, then William V succeeding in 1181). Aymer succeeded his brother in 1186 as the Count of Angoulême.

In that same year, he married Alice of Courtenay, the daughter of Peter of Courtenay (the son of Louis VI of France) and Elizabeth of the House of Courtenay. In 1188, they had a daughter who would play an important role in the history of England and France: Isabella of Angoulême.

Aymer died in Limoges, France on June 16, 1202. His daughter and only child Isabella succeeded him as the ruler of the county of Angoulême. Her title, however, was largely empty since her husband John, king of England, denied Isabelle control of her inheritance as well as her marriage dowry and dower. John's appointed governor, Bartholomew le Puy, ran most of the administrative affairs of Angoulême until John's death in 1216. In 1217 Isabelle returned and seized her inheritance from le Puy, who appealed unsuccessfully to the English king for help.

Aymer (also Aymar, Adhemar or Adomar; c. 1160 – 16 June 1202) was the last Count of Angoulême of the House of Taillefer. He was the third of the six children of Count William IV and Marguerite de Turenne. His two elder brothers, Wulgrin III and William VII, became the Counts of Angoulême in succession after the death of their father in 1179. Aymer succeeded his brother in 1186, and soon after was at the court of Richard the Lionheart, then Duke of Aquitaine and thus Aymer's lord, to receive recognition of his accession.[1] By 1191, Aymer had married Alice of Courtenay, the daughter of Peter I of Courtenay and thus granddaughter of King Louis VI of France.[2] In 1188, they had a daughter, Isabella of Angoulême, who married King John of England in 1200. The marriage alliance was sealed by two treaties, one public, the other private between Aymer and John. The count remained a steady ally of the kings of England against the rebellious House of Lusignan. Aymer had a claim to the County of La Marche, where in 1199 or 1200 he was exercising authority, perhaps on behalf of his son-in-law, and issued a charter to some monks of Aubignac. In February 1202 when John was visiting Angoulême to negotiate a treaty with Sancho VII of Navarre, Aymer took him on a tour of the newly consecrated abbey church at La Couronne.[3] The role of Aymer's daughter in John's continued refusal to properly care for his brother Richard the Lionheart's widow, Berengaria of Navarre, may explain the Count of Angoulême's proximity to the negotiations between the two kingdoms. Aymer died in Limoges on 16 June 1202. His daughter and only child succeeded him as Countess of Angoulême. Her title, however, was largely empty since her husband denied her control of her inheritance as well as her marriage dowry and dower. John's appointed governor, Bartholomew de Le Puy (de Podio), ran most of the administrative affairs of Angoulême until John's death in 1216. In 1217 Isabella returned and seized her inheritance from Bartholomew, who appealed unsuccessfully to the English king for help. Aymer's widow, Alice, ruled the city of Angoulême until March 1203, when John summoned her to court and granted her a monthly pension of 50 livres d'Anjou in return for her dower rights. She thereafter retired from public life to her estate at La Ferté-Gaucher, where she was living as late as July 1215, when she issued a charter at Provins using the title Countess of Angoulême.

GUILLAUME [VI] TALAFER d'Angoulême, son of VULGRIN [II] Comte d'Angoulême & his first wife Pontia de la Marche (-Messina 7 Aug 1179). The Historia Pontificum et Comitum Engolismensis names "Guillelmum primogenitum" as son of Comte Vulgrin [II] and his wife "Pontia filia Comitis de Marcha"[596]. "Willelmus Talafars comes Engolismensæ filius Vulgrini comitis" donated property to Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême by charter dated to [1089/1101] which refers to donations by "Willelmi Talafer avi mei et Vulgrini patris mei"[597]. He succeeded his father in 1140 as Comte d'Angoulême. "Guillelmus Talaferii comes Engolismensis" exempted Notre-Dame de Dalon from taxes on its lands by charter dated 1146[598]. He joined the crusade in 1147. An exchange of territories with Saint-Amant-de-Boixe recorded in a charter dated to [1146/59] recites prior donations by "Vulgrinus comes Engolismæ" and after his death by "filius suus domnus Vuillelmus Talafer"[599]. "Wmus Talafer, comes Engolismensis, filius Wlgrini comitis…et Arnaldus Bocardi" issued a charter dated 1163 concerning the forest of Marange, which names "filii mei Wlgrinus et W Talafer"[600]. The Chronicon Gaufredi Vosiensis records that "Guillermus filius Wlgrimi Comes Engolismensis, Ademarus Vicecomes Lemovicensis, Oliverius filius Gulpherii senioris de Turribus" were among those who left for Jerusalem in 1178, stating that "Engolismensis Comes Guillermus Sector-ferri" died "VII Id Aug apud Messinam Siciliæ"[601].

m firstly (after 1137) as her third husband, EMMA de Limoges, widow firstly of BARDON de Cognac and secondly of GUILLAUME X Duke of Aquitaine [GUILLAUME VIII Comte de Poitou], daughter of ADEMAR [II] Vicomte de Limoges & his [second wife Marie des Cars]. The Chronicon Gaufredi Vosiensis names "aliam filiam [Ademari]…Ennoa (seu Emma)" stating that she married "Guillermus Dux, frater Raymundi Antiochiæ principis" after the death of her earlier husband "Bardoni de Coniaco", before being abducted by "Willelmus Sector-ferri, filius Wlgrini Comitis Engolismensis"[602]. "Emma comitissa, uxor comitis Engolismensis, filia Ademari vicecomitis Lemovicensis" donated property "ripas stagni de Chalamans" to Notre-Dame de Dalon by undated charter[603].
m secondly ([1150/51]) as her third husband, MARGUERITE de Turenne, widow of ADEMAR [IV] Vicomte de Limoges and divorced wife of EBLES [III] Vicomte de Ventadour, daughter of RAYMOND [I] Vicomte de Turenne & his wife Mathilde du Perche (-21 Oct [1186/1202]). The Chronicon Gaufredi Vosiensis records that "Ademaro vicecomite Lemovicensi, sponsam illius Margaretam, sororem Bosonis de Torenna" married thirdly "Guillermus Sector-ferri Comes Engolismensis, multorum pater liberorum"[604]. Her parentage and first marriage are confirmed by the cartulary of Tulle St Martin which records a donation by "Ademarus vicecomes Lemovicensis et Aimericus de Gordo mariti duarum sororum Bosonis, Mangnæ et Margaritæ" dated 21 Dec 1143 made "pro anima Bosonis vicecomitis de Torenna qui gladio corruit" on the day of his burial, authorised by "Ebolus vicecomes de Ventedorn et Archambaldus vicecomes de Comborn", and made "in manu domni Ebali abbatis Tutellensis patrui ipsius Bosonis"[605]. The Chronicon Gaufredi Vosiensis records that "Ademaro vicecomite Lemovicensi, sponsam illius Margaretam, sororem Bosonis de Torenna" married "Ebolus Ventadorensis, filius Eboli Cantatoria" after her first husband died, but that the marriage ended after two years because of their consanguinity[606]. "Vuillelmus Talafers comes Engolismensis Vulgrini filius et Margarita uxor mea et filii nostri Vulgrinus scilicet primogenitus noster, Vuillelmus Talafers, Ademarus, Grisetus, Fulco et Almodis filia nostra uxor Amanei de Lebret" transferred rights to Saint-Amant-de-Boixe by charter dated 1171[607]. The necrology of Saint-Martial records the death “XII Kal Nov” of “Margarita Engolismensis comitissa, mater Ademari vicecomitis” and her donation[608].

Guillaume IV Taillefer de Angouleme (1134-1187)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_V_of_Angoul%C3%AAme

William V of Angoulême was the Count of Angoulême from 1140 to 1178. He inherited the territory from his father, Wulgrin II of Angoulême.

It is from him, that the territory was split between the three brothers all sons of William IV: Wulgrin III of Angoulême who was the eldest, William VI of Angoulême and Aymer of Angoulême.

After the death of Aymer, the territory did not pass to Aymer's daughter, Isabella of Angoulême, Queen consort to John of England, but rather to the daughter of Wulgrim III, Mathilde of Angoulême, who had married Hugh IX of Lusignan, father of Hugh X of Lusignan.

Wulgrin II (...) he married Pontia de la Marche (or de Montgomery), daughter of Roger the Poitevin and Almodis, the daughter of count Aldebert II of La Marche. They had only one son, William IV Taillefer.

Wulgrin II (also Vulgrin or Bougrin), called Taillifer or Rudel, was the Count of Angoulême from 1120 to his death on 16 November 1140.[1] He was a son of Count William III and he married Pontia de la Marche, daughter of Roger the Poitevin and Almodis, the daughter of count Aldebert II of La Marche. They had only one son, William IV of Angoulême. After the death of his first wife, Wulgrin remarried to Amable de Châtellerault and had three children: Fulk, Geoffrey "Martel" and an unnamed daughter.

He retook Blaye from William X of Aquitaine in 1127 and reconstructed the castle there in 1140.[2]

The troubadour Jaufré Rudel may be possibly his son or his son-in-law.[2]
