Die Udalrichinger waren ein fränkisch-alemannisches Adelsgeschlecht mit Sitz in Bregenz und Winterthur, das vom 8. bis zum 11. Jahrhundert existierte. Namensgeber war Graf Udalrich I., Sohn des Gerold von Anglachgau und Bruder der Hildegard und somit ein Schwager Karls des Großen. Diese gehörten zum Reichsadel, waren seit der zweiten Hälfte des 8. Jahrhunderts im Bodenseegebiet begütert und gewannen dort großen Einfluss. Sie besaßen Grafschaften in Alp-, Breis-, Thur-, Linz-, Argen- und Hegau. Ihre Kontrahenten waren die Hunfridinger, die in Rätien herrschten. Der Versuch der Udalrichinger, dieses Gebiet zu erobern, scheiterte trotz königlicher Billigung. Um 839 verloren sie große Teile ihrer Grafschaften am Bodensee an die Welfen, gewannen sie jedoch 854 wieder zurück und dehnten sogar ihre Herrschaft durch das gute Verhältnis zu den Karolingern auf Pannonien, das Klett-, das Nibel- und das Rheingau aus. Um 1040 teilte sich das Geschlecht in die drei Linien Buchhorn, Bregenz und Pfullendorf.

The Udalrichinger were a Frankish-Alemannic noble family established in Bregenz and Winterthur and existing from the 8th to the 11th century. It was named from Graf Udalrich I, son of Gerold von Anglachgau and brother of Hildegarde (thus a brother-in-law of Charlemagne). The family was part of the Imperial nobility, and since the second half of the 8th century were wealthy inhabitants of the Lake Constance area with considerable influence. They held counties in the Alps, Breis, Thur, Linz, Argen, and Hegau areas.
Their rivals were the Hunfridingers that prevailed in Ratien (Rhaetia). The attempts of the Udalrichingers to conquer the lands of the Hunfridingers failed, despite royal support. In 839, the lost much of their territory in the area of Lake Constance to the Welfs, but in 854 they restored their holds, and even extended their territories through a good relationship with the Carolingians from Pannonien, forcing the Kleft, Nibel, and Rheingau out.
Around 1040, the family split into three lines: The Buchhorn, the Bregenz, and the Pfullendorf.

Urkunden aus dem 8. und 9. Jahrhundert belegen, dass folgende Ortschaften dem Argengau zugeordnet waren: Tettnang, Langenargen, Laimnau, Apflau, Haslach.
Der früheste bekannte Graf im Argengau ist Ruthard, der als Stammvater der Welfen gilt (769). Ab 783 ist Ruadbert, möglicherweise ein Urenkel des Alemannenherzogs Gotfrid, als Graf des Argengaus belegt. Sein Neffe Udalrich I., Schwager Karls des Großen, folgte ihm nach. 807 wurde dessen Sohn Rodbert urkundlich erwähnt, der um 824 von einem Grafen Ruachar unbekannter Herkunft abgelöst wurde. Ludwig der Fromme verlieh die Grafschaft an seinen Schwager, den Welfen Konrad I.. Dessen Sohn, Welf II., verlor das Vertrauen Ludwig des Deutschen, als sich seine Brüder auf die Seite Karls des Kahlen schlugen. Ludwig setzte daraufhin Udalrich III. (einen Nachkommen des Udalrich I.) ein. Dessen Sohn Udalrich IV. fiel bei Arnulf von Kärnten in Ungnade und verlor das Grafenrecht um 890 zumindest vorübergehend.
Nachbargaue waren unter anderen der Hegau, der Linzgau und der Schussengau, wobei letzterer möglicherweise nur ein Untergau des Linzgaus gewesen sein mochte.

Argengau was a Carolingian county on the northeast shore of Lake Constance within the present regions of Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg. The eponymous Argen River flows through the territory. Documents from the 8th and 9th century show that the following towns were located within Argengau: Tettnang, Langenargen, Laimnau, Apflau, and Haslach.
The earleist known Count in Argengau was Ruthard, who was the progenitor of future counts in Argengau (769). From 783, Ruadbert, possibly great-grandson of Alemannian Duke Gotfrid, was Count of occupied Argengau. His nephew, Udalrich (Ulrich) I, brother of Charlemagne, succeeded him. In 807, Rodberte was count; his son Ruachar was mentioned in documents around 824. Louis the Pious gave the county to his brother, Guelph Konrad I. His son, Guelph II, lost the confidence of Louis the German when his brothers who supported Charles the Bald were defeated. Louis (Ludwig) appointed Udalrich III (a descendant of Uldalrich I) to succeed him. His son was Udalrich IV, whom Arnulf of Carinthia regarded quite well. Udalrich became Count around 890, at least temporarily.
Neighboring "gau" lands included Hegau, the Linzgau, and Schussengau, the latter being one of the Linzgaus. Untergau might have been part of Argengau.
