Jotham o Yotam (hebreo: יוֹתָם, Moderno: Yōtam, Tiberiano: Yōṯām; Griego: Ιωαθαμ, romanizado: Ioatham; Latín: Joatham)[1] fue el undécimo rey de Judá, e hijo del rey Uzías y Jerrusha (o Jerushah), hija de Sadoc. Jotham tenía 25 años cuando comenzó su reinado, y reinó durante 16 años. [2] Edwin R. Thiele concluyó que su reinado comenzó como una corregencia con su padre, que duró 11 años. Debido a que su padre Uzías estaba afligido por el tzaraath después de que entró en el Templo para quemar incienso, Jotam se convirtió en gobernador del palacio y de la tierra en ese momento, es decir, corregente, mientras que su padre vivía en una casa separada como leproso.

William F. Albright data su reinado en 742-735 a. Thiele fijó su corregencia con Uzías a partir de 751/750 aC y su único reinado de 740/39 a 736/735 aC, momento en el que fue depuesto por la facción pro-asiria en favor de su hijo Acaz. Thiele sitúa su muerte en 732/731 a. [3]

El Evangelio de Mateo enumera a Jotam de Judá en la genealogía de Jesús. El arqueólogo Nelson Glueck encontró una huella del rey Jotham cerca de Eilat. [4] También cerca de Eilat hay un wadi llamado "Yatam wadi".

Jotham heredó un gobierno fuerte, bien oficializado y administrado. Está registrado que construyó la Puerta Alta o Superior del Templo de Jerusalén, identificada por Matthew Poole como la Puerta Nueva mencionada en Jeremías 36:10. [5] "Construyó ciudades en las montañas de Judá, y en los bosques construyó castillos y torres". [6]

2 Reyes 15 menciona que Jotam luchó en guerras contra Rezin, rey de los arameos, y Pekah, rey de Israel (15:37). También derrotó a los amonitas, que le pagaban un inmenso tributo anual. Pero la creciente corrupción del reino del norte comenzó a impregnar Judá. [6]

Jotam fue contemporáneo de los profetas Isaías, Oseas, Amós y Miqueas, de cuyo consejo se benefició.

Las cronologías bíblicas para los dos reinos israelitas en el siglo 8 aC son profusas y desconcertantes. Algunas de las longitudes de reinado o sincronismos se dan desde el comienzo de un reinado único, mientras que otros se dan desde el comienzo de una corregencia o, en el caso de Pekah, desde el comienzo de un reinado rival. Thiele sostuvo que la clave para entender estos registros radica en una apreciación adecuada de la creciente amenaza de Asiria que ambos reinos enfrentaron. [7] En 754 a. C., Ashur-nirari V dirigió a los asirios contra Arpad en el norte de Aram. [8] Su sucesor Tiglath-Pileser III luchó contra Arpad en los años 743 a 740 aC, capturando la ciudad después de tres años. [9] Ante esta amenaza, Rezin de Damasco hizo una alianza con Pekah de Israel, y los dos eran por lo tanto enemigos del rey pro-asirio de Judá, Acaz (Isaías 7:1). A mediados de la década de 1990, un sello de bulla inscrito perteneciente al hijo de Jotham, Ahaz, apareció en el mercado de antigüedades. La inscripción decía: "Perteneciente a Acaz (hijo de) Yehotam, Rey de Judá".
