At the time that the throne passed to Rehoboam, inflation & taxes were a burden on the nation. Against the advice of his councilors he raised taxes ("And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions!"). This caused the Kingdom to split in two, and the legacy of Kings David and Solomon were shattered. This left him ruling over the southern half that included the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Simeon.
He was 41 years old when he became king & reigned for 17 years in Jerusalem. During his reign, Shishak, the king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem & took much booty. He had 18 wives, 60 concubines, 28 sons & 60 daughters. Died 958 BC.
