"Habiendo dicho tanto del Príncipe de Gales, no puedo despedirme de este tema sin rendir un justo homenaje a la memoria del ilustre español, que no solo fue su contemporáneo, sino singularmente apegado a su persona, y a la nación inglesa en general. Se trataba de don Sancho Martínez de Leyva, hijo de don Juan Martínez de Leyva, primer señor de la cámara del rey Alfonso XI. y adelantado alcalde de Castilla. Su hijo Sancho llegó a Inglaterra, donde ofreció sus servicios a Eduardo III. y asistió a Juan duque de Lancaster en su expedición a Escocia. Después fue a Francia, y sirvió bajo el Príncipe de Gales, con quien estuvo en la famosa batalla y victoria de Poictiers. Después de esto comandó el ejército inglés en [77] Picardía, y fue muy instrumental en las ventajas obtenidas sobre los franceses en esas guerras; y por su notable fuerza de cuerpo se llamaba Brazo de fierro, o "Brazo de Hierro". En recomprensión por sus servicios, cuando regresó a Inglaterra, Eduardo III. para testificar su respeto por su persona, le dio en matrimonio a su hija natural Elizabeth, por Elizabeth Suffolk, condesa de Northumberland, otorgándole además el privilegio, además de su armadura de abrigo paterno, de descuartizar los escudos de tiro de Inglaterra". "Se atribuyen a este rey [Eduardo III] dos hijos naturales, a saber, Juan Calcá 4, e Isabel, casada con Sancho Martínez de Leiva 5, un noble español, que por su cuenta acuarteló a los leopardos ingleses en su escudo". Carta, 539.

"Having said so much of the Prince of Wales, I cannot take leave of this subject without paying a just tribute to the memory of the illustrious Spaniard, who was not only his cotemporary, but singularly attached to his person, and to the English nation in general. This was Don Sancho Martinez de Leyva, son of Don John Martinez de Leyva, first lord of the bed-chamber to king Alfonso XI. and Adelantado Mayor of Castile. His son Sancho came over to England, where he offered his services to Edward III. and attended on John duke of Lancaster in his expedition to Scotland. He afterwards went into France, and served under the Prince of Wales, with whom he was at the famous battle and victory of Poictiers. After this he commanded the English army in [77] Picardy, and was very instrumental in the advantages gained over the French in those wars; and from his remarkable strength of body was called Brazo de fierro, or "Iron Arm." In recompence for his services, when he returned to England, Edward III. to testify his regard for his person, gave him in marriage his natural daughter Elizabeth, by Elizabeth Suffolk, countess of Northumberland, granting him further the privilege, in addition to his paternal coat armour, to quarter the armorial bearings of England." "There are ascribed to this king [Edward III] two natural children, viz. John Baldac 4, and Isabella, married to Sancho Martinez de Leiva 5, a Spanish nobleman, who on her account quartered the English leopards in his ecutcheon." Carte, 539.
