Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley
Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley (Berkeley, Gloucestershire, April 1271 – Wallingford Castle, 31 May 1326), sometimes termed The Magnanimous, was an English baron and rebel.
Born at Berkeley in the English county of Gloucestershire, he was the son of Thomas de Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley (d. 1321), and Joan de Ferrers (1255–1309). He was involved in the Scottish Wars from about 1295 to 1318. He acceded on 16 August 1308, was Governor of Gloucester 1312, Governor of Berwick-on-Tweed from 1314 which he lost to the Scots under the 1317 Capture of Berwick, Steward of the Duchy of Aquitaine 1319 and Justiciar of South Wales 1316. With the Earl of Lancaster, he rebelled against King Edward II, for which he was imprisoned in Wallingford Castle in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire), where he died on 31 May 1326 and was eventually buried at St Augustine's Abbey in Bristol.

Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Lord Berkeley was born in April 1271.1,2 He was the son of Thomas de Berkeley, 1st Lord Berkeley and Joan de Ferrers.1 He married, firstly, Eva la Zouche, daughter of Eon la Zouche and Millicent de Cauntelo, in 1289.3 He married, secondly, Isabel de Clare, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 6th Earl of Gloucester and Alice de Lusignan, circa 1316.3 He died on 31 May 1326 at age 55 at Wallingford Castle, Berkshire, England.3 He was buried at Wallingford Castle, Berkshire, England.3 He was buried at St. Augustine's, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.3
Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Lord Berkeley also went by the nick-name of Maurice 'the Magnaminous'.1 Between 1295 and 1308 he summoned to Parliament by writ, whereby he may be held to have been created Lord de Berkeley in his own right, although there is no actual record of his having sat in Parliament.1 He fought in the Scottish Wars between 1295 and 1318, where he distinguished himself.1 He fought in the siege of Carlaverock in July 1300.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Berkeley [E., 1295] on 16 August 1308, by writ, in the lifetime of his father.1 He held the office of Warden of Gloucester in 1312.1 He held the office of Captain of Berwick in 1315.1 He held the office of Chief Justiciar of South Wales in 1316.1 He was a Commissioner to Scotland in 1316.1 He joined the Earl of Lancaster in the rebellion against King Edward II.3 He held the office of Seneschal of Aquitaine in 1320.3 On 6 January 1321/22 he was sent prisoner to Wallingford Castle.3

Maurice III. Seventh Lord. 1321 to 1326.
Maurice succeeded on the death of his father, whom he much resembled in his fondness for all martial exercises and pursuits. He was early accustomed to arms in the Scottish and Welsh wars, held many important military posts and commands, and was summoned to parliament as a peer in the lifetime of his father.
In 1322 he joined with the lords Audely and Mortimer in the rebellion directed against the King's favourites, the two Despencers. Being induced to go with some others to meet the King at Cirencester, on the faith of a safe conduct, he was there treacherously seized and committed to prison in the castle of Wallingford. Berkeley Castle and manors were declared forfeited and were seized by the King, who also laid his hands on all Maurice's plate, jewels, and valuables.
Maurice remained in prison at Wallingford, although several attempts were made to rescue him, until May 1326, when he died there. His remains were at first interred at Wallingford, but were afterwards removed to St. Augustine's at Bristol. He was succeeded by Thomas, his eldest son.

Maurice III "the magnanimous" was not over the age of 8 years old when he married Eve la Zouche in 1289.
Maurice distinguished himself in the Scottish Wars between 1295 and 1318; he helped defeat a Scottish army under William Wallace. on 22 July 1298 at the Battle of Falkirk in Scotland.
In July 1300 Maurice was at the Siege of Carlaverock, where he distinguished himself from his father, who was there as well, by differencing his arms with a label, azure, "Pur se ke ses pere vivoit."
Maurice attended Prince Edward (the future King Edward II) into Scotland in 1306.
He was summoned to Parliament, by writs directed "Mauricio de Berkeleye" whereby he may be held to have become Lord Berkeley between 16 August 1308 and 15 May 1321.
He was Warden of Gloucester in 1312.
He married the successor of our ancestor (Eva) Isabel de Clare, daughter of Gilbert "the Red Earl" (de Clare), 6th Earl of Gloucester and Hertford and Alice de Lusignan, circa 1316.
Maurice was Chief Justiciar of South Wales in 1316. He was Seneschal of Aquitaine in France in 1320.
Maurice joined the Earl of Lancaster in the rebellion against King Edward II and the Despencer family, and--within 6 months of his father's death--Maurice was sent prisoner to Wallingford Castle on 20 January 1321/22. He died as a prisoner on 31 May 1326 at Wallingford Castle, Oxfordshire, at the age 45 years and 1 month.
