Esteban Illán, Mozarabic hero of Toledo
Esteban Illán, in the middle of the twelfth century, held the resounding position of casalmedina of Toledo, a mixed figure of what would later be a governor and a mayor, and had so much wealth that he acted as lender to the King himself, and for that reason he was mentioned in the testament of Alfonso VIII, granted in 1204, when the monarch ordered to return "the many maravedies" he borrowed from Esteban Illán, mayor of Toledo, "according to the open letters, with the royal seal, which has said mayor" .

Esteban Illán, , ostentó a mediados del siglo XII el sonoro cargo de casalmedina de Toledo, una figura mixta de lo que después serían un gobernador y un alcalde, y tuvo tantas riquezas que actuaba de prestamista del mismísimo Rey, y por ello se le menciona en el testamento de Alfonso VIII, otorgado en 1204, cuando el monarca dispone que se devuelvan "los muchos maravedíes" que tomó prestados de Esteban Illán, alcalde de Toledo, "según las cartas abiertas, con el sello real, que tiene dicho alcalde".
EL CUARTO DE LOS HIJOS DE ILLÁN PÉREZ, ESTEBAN ILLÁN , PUEDE SER CONSIDERADO EL FUNDADOR DE NUESTRO CABALLERESCO Y NOBLE LINAJE. LA CRÓNICA GENERAL LE ATRIBUYE LA SUBLEVACIÓN DE LA CIUDAD DE TOLEDO Y LA ENTREGA DEL REY NIÑO , ALFONSO VIII, AL BANDO DE LOS LARA , ASÍ COMO LA FORTIFICACIÓN DE LA TORRE DE SAN ROMÁN. EN AGRADECIMIENTO, EL REY LE ENTREGÓ , COMO DONACIÓN Y ENTRE OTRO BIENES,LOS CASTILLOS DE ALVADALEJO , ZUDAHARRAR Y CASTREJÓN , ASÍ COMO LA TENENCIA Y GUARDA DE LA CIUDAD DE TOLEDO CON SUS ALCÁZARES Y CARGOS DE JUSTICIA.
ESTEBAN ILLÁN APARECE EN LA DOCUMENTACIÓN EN 1146 COMO REPOBLADOR DE CAMPO REY ; EN 1163 RUBRICA EN ÁRABE LA DONACIÓN DE SU PADRE A LOS CANÓNIGOS DE TOLEDO Y , DESDE EL 1 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1166 AL 27 DE MARZO DE 1168 , LO VEMOS COMO ALGUACIL Y MÁS TARDE , EN 1202 Y 1204 COMO ALCALDE.
MUERE ESTEBAN ILLÁN EL 11 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1208 , SIENDO ENTERRADO EN LA IGLESIA DE SAN ROMÁN , DONDE PUEDE VERSE SU SEPULTURA. DE ÉL SE CONSERVA UN RETRATO ECUESTRE EN LA CATEDRAL DE TOLEDO , EN QUE APARECE CON SUS ARMAS Y EL AJEDREZADO DE AZUR Y PLATA ,ESCUDO DE SUS DESCENDIENTES. ESTEBAN ILLÁN , MUERTO CUATRO AÑOS ANTES DE LA TRANSCENDENTE BATALLA DE LA NAVAS DE TOLOSA ,FUE CABALLERO DUEÑO DE CUANTIOSA FORTUNA COMO SE DEDUCE DEL PROPIO TESTAMENTO DE ALFONSO VIII FECHADO EL 8 DE DICIEMBRE DE 1204 , EN QUE EL REY HACE REFERENCIA A QUE TIENE RECIBIDOS MUCHOS MARAVEDÍES PRESTADOS POR " STEPHANO IULIANI" , ALCALDE DE TOLEDO . ENTRE LOS MÚLTIPLES BIENES DE ESTEBAN ILLÁN , ENCONTRAMOS LA FINCA LA VENTOSILLA Y LA DE COLMENAR , EL AZUD DE ALFITA , JUNTO AL CASTILLO DE CALAÑA , UN MESÓN EN EL ARRABAL DE FRANCOS , UNA TIERRA EN EL ARROYO REGACHUELO (LLAMADO HOY DE LA ROSA ) , UNA VIÑA EN FONTALBA , UN HUERTO EN ALCAUDETE , UN MESÓN EN ZOCODOVER Y LAS ALQUERÍAS DE YEPES Y FONTES, CONCEDIDAS POR EL PROPIO REY ALFONSO VIII.
