Peggy married John on January 8, 1824 in Fredericksburg.

Peggy was mother to nine children: Robert Williams, John Mercer Jr., Isaac Williams, George Smith, Waller Tazewell, Eliza Williams, Hugh Mercer, James French, and William MacFarland. Two, John Mercer Jr. and Hugh Mercer, rest in this plot.

All of her sons served in the Confederate army. Waller Tazewell Patton and George Smith Patton, both Colonels of their respective regiments, were mortally wounded while leading troops in battle. Gen. George S. Patton of WWII fame was her great-grandson.

Her maternal grandfather, Revolutionary War veteran Capt. Phillip Slaughter of Culpeper, died while visiting Richmond and is buried nearby.

In her last years, she was a patient at Western State Hospital in Staunton, one of two state-run mental hospitals. Her records there show the following:
