Reginboldus - présenté comme vicecomes, c'est à dire comte du Gau - est mentionné en 963 en tant que témoin d'une donation.
C'est le lui "père fondateur" des Isenburg/Isemburg, dont on comptera de très nombreuses lignées, l'une de celles qui subsistaient encore au XVIIIème ayant été élevée au rang de princes d'Empire en 1744.
C'est Reimbold (1092-1121) qui fit construire le chateau dont la famille prit le nom, au confluent de la Sayn, affluent de la rive droite du Rhin dont le cours va approximativement de Montabaur vers Neuwied, et de l'Iserbach.
Les Isenburg donnèrent à Trêves (Arnold 1242, Johann 1547) et Cologne (Salentin 1567) de nombreux princes d'église
Salentin - que sa tombe dans la cathédrale de Cologne montre comme chevalier en prière, démissionna avec l'autorisation du Pape et prit épouse pour sauver sa lignée de l'extinction. Son fils Ernst (+ 1664) fut en 1636 gouverneur général des Pays-Bas et mena les armées contre Guillaume d'Orange.Il a sa tombe dans la cathédrale de Bruxelles.
